Onomastics has a branch that studies the origin and meaning of place names. It is called toponymy. Toponymy (from the Greek τόπος topos, "place", and ὄνομα ónoma, "name") is the set of toponyms of a space, that is to say, the names of places. The first sign of a town's identity is its toponym.
Usually the toponymy is a reflection of the trades, events, architecture, devotions, etc. of a town The names of the streets identify the spaces of the town itself. They are usually popular, traditional and/or historical names until the 20th century, when political-religious ones began to prevail. Despite everything, the popular name continues to be in common and everyday use.
The old town of Albaida (thirteenth century) is located on top of a hill surrounded by the Albaida river and the Bouet ravine. An orography (mountains) that influenced the town's toponymy.

Jaume Gil-Mascarell (DEP) and Luz Ortíz, together, almost 40 years ago (1985), presented a work on the toponymy of Albaida from a specific year: 1626 at the onomastic colloquium held in Valencia.
Almost 30 years ago now (1995), a double onomastic colloquium was held in Ontinyent, which were edited by Comercial Denes in 1997, the albaidins Vicent Terol and Abel Soler, also in two hands, to present a work analyzing the urban evolution of Albaida between the 13th and 19th centuries.
Now twelve years ago, and of course, Raul Vidal and Josep Moll, in the book Festes Patronals and de Moros i Cristians (year 2011), published two articles on street names in the 20th century. A century of urban and industrial development in the town.
Regarding the sources of study for the 4 works, the majority of research has obviously been the Municipal Archives of Albaida. Documentation of both the fiscal and economic types as well as the registers and censuses of residents.
Recovering the historical, traditional and popular toponymy would mean remembering and recovering the Albaidin cultural wisdom.
